Kindergarten Program
Counseling Overview
This is a busy time for kindergarten students. They’re learning many new skills. Social – emotional skills are important to healthy child development. Skills such as empathy, emotion management, and social problem solving contribute to children’s success in school. I use the Second Step Program to teach these important skills to our kindergarten students.
We will work on the following objectives:
· Making a friend
· Being a good friend
· Solving problems with other children
· Identifying their own feelings and identify others’ feelings
· Developing an understanding that feelings can change
· Understand that feelings can vary in strength
· Using words and actions to show you care
· Using strategies to calm down when they get upset
· Dealing with disappointment
· Playing fair with others
· Ignoring distractions
· Dealing with name calling
I’m looking forward to getting to know our kindergarten students. Throughout the year, I will be inviting each child to eat lunch with me in the counseling office.

Kindergarten Lunches
All of our kindergarten students will have a turn to eat lunch in the counseling office. In addition to getting to know the children better, I want students to feel comfortable coming to me when they need help problem solving. I also like to know how students are adjusting to their new environment. We measure, on a scale of 1 – 10 (10 being the best), how comfortable they are in school. If your child rates school 6 or below, we problem solve to find out what changes could take place to increase the comfort level. We know from research that the more comfortable students feel in their surroundings, the more they learn.
Please contact your child’s teacher if you have concerns about him or her adjusting to kindergarten. I am also available to help. I can be reached at 410-313-5512 or [email protected].
