Third Grade Program
Your 3rd grade child will complete a classroom guidance unit on conflict management and bully prevention. I use the program Harassment Hurts published by Sunburst Communications and the Howard County Mental Health Curriculum to teach this unit. Students will learn about three forms of harassment: gossiping, taunting, and bullying. Students will examine various scenarios and identify which characters are acting the role of the bully, victim, or bystander. In particular, we discuss the powerful role of the bystander in stopping someone from bullying another individual. By discussing and completing activities on each scenario, students will learn the steps needed to defend themselves and others from harassment. In addition, we will practice resolving real life conflicts from the playground and classroom. Please ask your child to tell you what he/she is learning about bully prevention and conflict resolution through his/her participation in this unit.
The following are key concepts included in the counseling lessons:
1. making and keeping friends
2. conflict resolution skills
3. assertive vs. aggressive behaviors
4. managing emotions
5. recognizing, refusing, and reporting bullying
6. taking responsibility for our words and actions
7. creating a safe, caring, and respectful school
Please contact me if you have questions or concerns about the 3rd grade counseling objectives. I can be reached at 410-313-5512 or [email protected].

Third Grade Lunches
All of our 3rd grade students will have a turn to eat lunch in the counseling office. In addition to getting to know the children better, I want students to feel comfortable coming to me when they need help problem solving. I also like to know how students are adjusting to 3rd grade. We measure, on a scale of 1 – 10 (10 being the best), how comfortable they are in school. If your child rates school 6 or below, we problem solve to find out what changes could take place to increase the comfort level. We know from research that the more comfortable students feel in their surroundings, the more they learn.
Please contact your child’s teacher if you have concerns about him or her adjusting to 3rd grade. I am also available to help. I can be reached at 410-313-5512 or [email protected].
